Product Description
United States Gypsum Company (USG — founded 1902; today USG Corporation, part of Knauf; headquartered Chicago IL) is through the 20th century and today one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of gypsum building products, joint compounds, acoustical ceiling tile, and specialty building materials. USG’s Sheetrock brand of drywall and joint compound dominated the U.S. drywall market through the asbestos era.
USG manufactured through the asbestos era a broad line of asbestos-containing products:
- Sheetrock ready-mixed joint compound with asbestos fiber — the industry-standard drywall finishing product, troweled and sanded by drywall installers through the mid-1970s
- Acoustical ceiling tile with asbestos content — commercial and institutional building ceiling systems
- Marinite marine insulation board — the U.S. Navy and commercial marine standard bulkhead lining and fireproofing board (separately covered on the Marinite USG marine insulation board page)
- Specialty gypsum building materials — patching compounds, base coats, texture products
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that USG Sheetrock joint compound, acoustical ceiling tile, Marinite marine insulation, and specialty building products exposed drywall installers, painters, construction workers, marine workers, and building-maintenance workers to substantial airborne asbestos through the documented era.
United States Gypsum Company has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation. USG entered Chapter 11 in 2001 driven by asbestos personal-injury liability and emerged 2006 through asbestos-trust mechanisms. The USG Asbestos Personal Injury Trust handles USG asbestos personal-injury liability.
