Product Description

Union Carbide Corporation (founded 1917; today a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company after 2001 acquisition; headquartered Midland MI) is through the 20th century one of the principal U.S. chemical, plastics, and industrial materials companies. Union Carbide’s asbestos-industry exposure involves two distinct pathways:

Calidria chrysotile mining supply. Union Carbide operated the Calidria Mine in San Benito County California from 1963-1985 — the only major U.S. chrysotile asbestos mine of the late asbestos era. Union Carbide supplied Calidria chrysotile fiber to U.S. asbestos-product manufacturers (particularly for joint-compound, texture, and specialty applications) during the era when U.S. domestic asbestos-fiber supply was ending and Canadian Quebec supply dominated the U.S. market. Calidria fiber was allegedly used in Georgia-Pacific Ready-Mix, National Gypsum Gold Bond, and other U.S. joint-compound and texture products.

Union Carbide Bakelite phenolic molding compounds. Union Carbide acquired the historic Bakelite Corporation in 1939 and manufactured Bakelite-brand phenolic molding compounds through the asbestos era — separately covered on the multiple Union Carbide Bakelite phenolic pages within this AP defendant index. Certain Bakelite phenolic grades allegedly included asbestos-filled formulations.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Union Carbide Calidria chrysotile fiber supplied U.S. asbestos-product manufacturers and that Union Carbide Bakelite asbestos-filled phenolic compounds exposed compound molders and downstream product users to airborne asbestos.

Union Carbide Corporation has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.

Workers Exposed

  • U.S. asbestos-product manufacturing workers — indirectly exposed through downstream product use of Calidria chrysotile fiber
  • U.S. drywall installers, painters, construction workers — through joint compound products made with Calidria fiber
  • Chemical workers at Union Carbide Bakelite phenolic-compound production plants
  • Phenolic-compound molders working Bakelite asbestos-filled grades

If You Were Exposed to Union Carbide Calidria Chrysotile Fiber or Bakelite Asbestos Products

If your exposure traces to Union Carbide Calidria chrysotile fiber (via joint compound, texture products, or specialty asbestos products manufactured with Calidria fiber) or to Union Carbide Bakelite asbestos-filled phenolic compounds during the asbestos era — and you have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, or another asbestos-related illness — you may have legal rights.
