Premises Description

Textron Inc. (founded 1923 as Special Yarns Corporation; reorganized as Textron 1944; headquartered Providence RI) is a diversified U.S. industrial conglomerate. Textron’s aerospace and defense subsidiaries operating through the asbestos era include:

  • Bell Helicopter Textron (Fort Worth TX) — the principal U.S. rotary-wing aircraft manufacturer (UH-1 Huey, AH-1 Cobra, V-22 Osprey with Boeing)
  • Cessna Aircraft (Wichita KS) — general aviation aircraft (single-engine, business jets)
  • Beechcraft (Wichita KS) — general aviation and military trainers (acquired 2014)
  • Textron Marine & Land Systems (New Orleans LA) — amphibious craft and armored vehicles
  • Lycoming Engines (Williamsport PA) — piston aircraft engines
  • Kautex Textron (Manistee MI) — automotive plastics
  • Jacobsen (Charlotte NC) — commercial turf equipment (Ransomes acquisition)
  • Various acquired specialty operations

Each operated through the asbestos era with extensive asbestos-containing plant infrastructure. Bell Helicopter Fort Worth TX and Cessna/Beechcraft Wichita KS in particular were major concentrated U.S. aerospace-machinist workforce sites through the asbestos era.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Textron / Bell Helicopter / Cessna — as premises owner — exposed its aerospace and defense workforce and contractor pipefitters, insulators, boilermakers, and trade workers to extensive asbestos.

Textron Inc. / Bell Helicopter Textron / Cessna Aircraft has been named as a Premises Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
