Product Description
Sperry Vickers was the hydraulic-pump and fluid-power division of Sperry Corporation, formed after Sperry acquired Vickers Incorporated (Detroit, Michigan) in the 1930s and operated as Sperry Vickers and later Vickers Inc. through the asbestos era. The division designed and manufactured vane pumps, piston pumps, hydraulic motors, control valves, and complete hydraulic power units used in steel mills, machine tools, paper-mill drives, injection-molding presses, marine deck machinery, mobile equipment, and defense applications.
Sperry Vickers hydraulic equipment is distinct from the Sperry Rand defense-electronics and marine-navigation product lines covered on the Sperry Rand / Unisys page. The hydraulic-pump line has been named separately in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation as a Manufacturer Defendant.
Plaintiffs alleged that Sperry Vickers hydraulic pumps and power units were specified with:
- Asbestos shaft packing at rotating-shaft seals on vane and piston pumps.
- Compressed asbestos-sheet gaskets at pump-cover, port-plate, and manifold flanges.
- Asbestos-containing thermal insulation on hot-oil hydraulic reservoirs and adjacent piping in continuous-service industrial installations.
Workers Exposed
- Millwrights and industrial maintenance mechanics rebuilding Sperry Vickers vane and piston pumps in steel mills, paper mills, and heavy-manufacturing plants.
- Pipefitters replacing gasket sets on hydraulic power units during scheduled outages.
- Shipyard machinists overhauling Sperry Vickers deck-machinery and steering-gear hydraulic pumps on Navy and merchant vessels.
- Machine-tool and injection-molding press service technicians disturbing pump packing and cover gaskets during rebuilds.
If You Worked With Sperry Vickers Hydraulic Pumps
If you rebuilt, repacked, or serviced Sperry Vickers hydraulic pumps, motors, or power units during the asbestos era — and have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, or another asbestos-related illness — you may have legal rights.
