Product Description
Sauer-Sundstrand — later restyled Sundstrand-Sauer and eventually Sauer-Danfoss — was the joint hydrostatic-drive venture formed between Sundstrand Corporation (Rockford, Illinois) and Sauer Getriebe AG / Sauer Hydraulik (Neumünster, West Germany) to design, manufacture, and market axial-piston hydraulic pumps, hydraulic motors, and complete hydrostatic transmissions for mobile equipment, marine deck machinery, and heavy-industrial power units.
Sauer-Sundstrand hydrostatic drive assemblies were specified into agricultural equipment, construction machinery, refuse packers, mining haulers, marine winches and windlasses, and industrial hydraulic power units through the asbestos era. Sauer-Sundstrand and Sundstrand-Sauer are distinct product lines from the generic Sundstrand Corporation industrial-pump line addressed on the Sundstrand Asbestos Industrial Pumps page.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Sauer-Sundstrand / Sundstrand-Sauer hydrostatic assemblies were specified with:
- Asbestos shaft packing at rotating input-shaft seals on axial-piston pumps and hydraulic motors.
- Compressed asbestos-sheet gaskets at pump-cover, port-plate, valve-block, and manifold flanges.
- Asbestos-containing thermal insulation on hot-oil reservoirs and adjacent hydraulic piping in continuous-duty industrial installations.
Workers Exposed
- Mobile-equipment mechanics rebuilding Sauer-Sundstrand hydrostatic transmissions on agricultural, construction, and refuse-hauling equipment.
- Industrial millwrights and maintenance mechanics overhauling Sundstrand-Sauer hydraulic pumps and motors on stationary industrial power units.
- Shipyard machinists servicing Sauer-Sundstrand deck-machinery and winch hydraulic drives on merchant and offshore vessels.
- Pipefitters replacing gasket sets on hot-oil hydraulic manifolds during scheduled outages.
If You Worked With Sauer-Sundstrand or Sundstrand-Sauer Hydraulic Drives
If you rebuilt, repacked, or serviced Sauer-Sundstrand / Sundstrand-Sauer hydrostatic transmissions, axial-piston pumps, or hydraulic motors during the asbestos era — and have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, or another asbestos-related illness — you may have legal rights.
