Product Description

Robbins & Myers, Inc., headquartered in Springfield, Ohio, manufactured the Moyno line of progressive cavity (rotor/stator) positive-displacement pumps used for handling wastewater sludges, polymers, adhesives, viscous chemicals, food slurries, asphalt, and abrasive process fluids. Moyno pumps were installed at municipal wastewater treatment plants, chemical plants, paper mills, refineries, food processing facilities, and mining operations across the United States.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Robbins & Myers Moyno progressive cavity pumps used during the asbestos era were fitted with asbestos-based compression packing at the shaft stuffing box on packed-gland models, asbestos-containing flange gaskets at suction and discharge connections and at inspection covers, and asbestos thermal insulation on pump bodies handling hot polymers, sludges, and asphalt. Replacement packing and gaskets were allegedly supplied by Garlock, John Crane, and Anchor Packing.

Workers Exposed

Plaintiffs alleged that workers exposed to asbestos through Robbins & Myers Moyno pumps included:

  • Wastewater plant operators and millwrights who repacked Moyno pumps handling primary and secondary sludges
  • Chemical-plant and paper-mill mechanics who serviced Moyno pumps in polymer and adhesive service
  • Refinery and asphalt-plant maintenance crews who removed and reinstalled asbestos lagging on hot Moyno pumps
  • Pipefitters who cut and scraped asbestos flange gaskets during Moyno rotor/stator changeouts
