Riley Stoker Corporation of Worcester, Massachusetts supplied complete combustion systems to the U.S. utility and industrial boiler market, and — according to publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation — supplied the refractory brick, arch tile, and companion mortar used to line the combustion chambers and stoker throats of those units. Riley refractory brick allegedly was specified for pulverized-coal boiler walls, spreader-stoker furnaces, and traveling-grate arch construction across paper mills, chemical plants, sugar refineries, and municipal utility stations.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos litigation that the refractory brick, plastic refractory, and setting mortar supplied under the Riley name incorporated asbestos as a binder and thermal-shock additive — consistent with the industry-standard formulations produced by other refractory manufacturers of the same era. The material was allegedly present in original construction packages shipped by Riley and in replacement refractory kits sold for outage-cycle rebricking through the late 1970s.
