Product Description

Reliance Electric Company (founded 1904 in Cleveland OH; acquired by Rockwell International 1995; today part of Rexnord and other successors) and Emerson Electric Company (founded 1890, headquartered St. Louis MO) manufactured through the 20th century two of the principal U.S. lines of industrial electric motors, generators, motor drives, and motor-control equipment for refinery, power-plant, paper-mill, steel-mill, mining, and general industrial applications.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Reliance Electric and Emerson Electric industrial motors, generators, and motor-control equipment were specified through the asbestos era with:

  • Asbestos motor and generator winding insulation on large industrial and utility electric machines
  • Asbestos electrical wire insulation on motor leads and control wiring
  • Asbestos arc-chute components in motor-control equipment (motor starters, contactors, motor-control centers)
  • Asbestos gaskets at motor housing joints

Electrical workers, industrial electricians, motor rebuild technicians, and plant maintenance workers who serviced Reliance and Emerson motors and motor-control equipment — particularly during motor rewind operations at electric motor rebuild shops — disturbed asbestos as routine work.

Reliance Electric / Emerson Electric has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
