Premises Description

Occidental Petroleum Corporation (Oxy — founded 1920; today headquartered Houston TX) and its Occidental Chemical Corporation (OxyChem) subsidiary — the corporate successor to Hooker Chemical Company after the 1968 acquisition, along with numerous other acquired U.S. chemical operations — operated through the 20th century one of the largest U.S. chemical, chlor-alkali, and specialty chemical enterprises. Major Occidental / OxyChem asbestos-era U.S. sites included:

  • Niagara Falls NY — historic Hooker Chemical / OxyChem chlor-alkali and specialty chemicals
  • Deer Park TX — chlor-alkali, ethylene dichloride, and specialty chemicals
  • Ingleside TX — Corpus Christi-area chemicals
  • Delaware City DE — refining operations
  • Muscle Shoals AL — specialty chemicals
  • Convent LA, Geismar LA — Mississippi River operations
  • Wichita KS — chlor-alkali (former Vulcan Chemicals)
  • Elyria OH — chemical operations
  • Taft LA — Diamond Shamrock legacy chlor-alkali

Occidental / OxyChem chlor-alkali plants at Niagara Falls, Deer Park, Wichita, and Taft operated through the asbestos era using asbestos-diaphragm cell technology — the industry-standard chlor-alkali process of the era that required routine asbestos diaphragm replacement.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Occidental Petroleum / OxyChem — as premises owner and as user of asbestos-diaphragm chlor-alkali technology — exposed its chemical workforce and contractor pipefitters, insulators, boilermakers, and trade workers to extensive asbestos.

Occidental Petroleum / OxyChem / Hooker Chemical successor has been named as a Premises Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
