Premises Description
National Steel Corporation (founded 1929; long headquartered Pittsburgh PA then Mishawaka IN; entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002; principal steel assets acquired by U.S. Steel in 2003) was through most of the asbestos era one of the largest U.S. integrated steel producers, operating a network of major mills including:
- Great Lakes Steel Division — Ecorse and River Rouge MI (the Zug Island / Downriver Detroit complex; blast furnaces, coke ovens, BOFs, hot- and cold-strip mills)
- Weirton Steel Division — Weirton WV (until the 1984 ESOP spin-off as independent Weirton Steel Corporation)
- Granite City Steel Division — Granite City IL (blast furnaces, coke ovens, BOFs; today operated by U.S. Steel)
- Midwest Steel Division — Portage IN (finishing mill on Lake Michigan)
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that National Steel — as premises owner of the Great Lakes, Weirton, Granite City, and Midwest works — exposed its steelworker workforce (United Steelworkers of America representation, and Independent Steelworkers Union at Weirton) and contractor pipefitters, insulators, and boilermakers to asbestos refractory in blast furnaces, coke ovens, and BOFs; asbestos pipe covering on plant steam mains; spray-applied fireproofing on structural steel; and asbestos gaskets and packing at process equipment.
National Steel Corporation has allegedly been named as a Premises Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
