Product Description

National Oilwell (later National Oilwell Varco) triplex drilling mud pumps allegedly used asbestos-fiber compression packing on piston rods and asbestos-reinforced valve seals to contain high-pressure drilling mud, according to publicly filed asbestos litigation records. Rig hands allegedly repacked these mud pumps at the wellsite, cutting and installing braided asbestos packing rings by hand — a job that allegedly released respirable asbestos fibers directly at the pump.

Workers Exposed

Roughnecks, drilling rig floormen, and oilfield mechanics allegedly performed most of the mud-pump repacking and seal work. Toolpushers and drillers allegedly supervised the work in the immediate breathing zone. Rig maintenance crews allegedly cleaned out spent packing debris from pump housings during scheduled overhauls.
