Product and Premises Description
National Gypsum Company (founded 1925, headquartered Charlotte NC) is one of the principal U.S. manufacturers of gypsum building products — Sheetrock-style drywall, ready-mixed joint compound (Gold Bond brand), ceiling tile, and related building materials.
Gold Bond ready-mixed joint compound with asbestos fiber is one of the most heavily-litigated U.S. construction-trade asbestos products alongside Georgia-Pacific Ready-Mix. National Gypsum manufactured Gold Bond ready-mix joint compound containing chrysotile asbestos from the early 1960s through the 1977 asbestos-removal reformulation. Gold Bond joint compound was troweled and sanded by drywall installers, painters, and construction workers to finish drywall seams — with sanding operations generating substantial airborne asbestos dust that construction workers and adjacent trades inhaled without respiratory protection.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that National Gypsum Company Gold Bond joint compound and related asbestos-containing building products exposed drywall installers, painters, construction workers, and building-maintenance workers to substantial airborne asbestos through the documented era.
National Gypsum Company has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation. National Gypsum entered Chapter 11 in 1990 driven by asbestos personal-injury liability and emerged 1993 through asbestos-trust mechanisms. The National Gypsum / Gold Bond Building Products Asbestos Settlement Trust handles NGC asbestos personal-injury liability.
