Product Description
Mueller Industries, historically headquartered in the American Midwest with major copper fabrication and refrigeration-fitting plants across the U.S., is publicly identified in asbestos litigation as a leading supplier of copper and brass pipe fittings for refrigeration, HVAC, and plumbing service. Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Mueller Refrigeration branded fittings — including sweat couplings, elbows, tees, flare fittings, access valves, and drier shells — were installed on refrigerant, chilled-water, hot-water, condenser-water, and process piping across commercial refrigeration installations, HVAC chiller plants, supermarket rack systems, and industrial cold storage.
Court filings allege that the fittings themselves were copper alloy products, but the surrounding jointing and sealing materials — asbestos-bearing pipe joint compound, compressed asbestos sheet gaskets, and braided asbestos valve packing — were the routine asbestos exposure pathway associated with installations that used Mueller fittings.
Asbestos Content
Publicly filed complaints alleged the following asbestos pathways associated with Mueller Industries and Mueller Refrigeration fittings during the asbestos era:
- Asbestos-bearing pipe joint compound (pipe dope) applied at threaded joints between Mueller fittings and steel or brass pipe.
- Compressed asbestos sheet gaskets cut and installed at flanged fittings, flare unions, and access-port covers.
- Braided asbestos valve packing installed in service valves, king valves, and access valves connected downstream of Mueller fittings.
- Asbestos pipe insulation wrapped around fitted piping runs and stripped by insulators during service work.
Workers Exposed
Publicly filed complaints identified the trades most frequently alleged to have encountered asbestos through work on piping systems using Mueller fittings:
- Refrigeration mechanics brazing and sweating Mueller fittings onto commercial and industrial refrigeration systems.
- HVAC service technicians installing and servicing chiller-plant piping and rooftop unit connections.
- Pipefitters and steamfitters installing hot-water, chilled-water, and process piping using Mueller fittings.
- Plumbers running domestic water and drainage piping with Mueller copper products.
- Insulators stripping and reapplying asbestos pipe insulation around fitted joints during retrofits.
