Premises Description

McLouth Steel Corporation (founded 1934; principal integrated mill on the Detroit River at Trenton MI plus Gibraltar MI cold-rolling operations; entered bankruptcy twice — 1981 and 1995 — with final Trenton closure in 1996) was through the mid-20th century a notable Detroit-area integrated steel producer serving the automotive industry, and was one of the first U.S. mills to adopt basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking and continuous casting.

McLouth’s Trenton Works operated blast furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces (BOF), continuous casters, and hot- and cold-strip mills on the Detroit River south of Detroit, adjacent to Great Lakes Steel Ecorse and the Downriver industrial corridor. The Gibraltar cold-rolling facility finished coils for automotive body stock.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that McLouth Steel — as premises owner of the Trenton and Gibraltar MI works — exposed its steelworker workforce (United Steelworkers of America representation) and contractor pipefitters, insulators, and boilermakers to asbestos refractory in blast furnaces and BOFs; asbestos pipe covering on plant steam mains; spray-applied fireproofing on structural steel; and asbestos gaskets and packing at process equipment.

McLouth Steel Corporation has allegedly been named as a Premises Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
