Product Description

McGraw-Edison Company (formed 1957 by merger of McGraw Electric and Thomas A. Edison Inc.; acquired by Cooper Industries 1985; today Cooper Power Systems and other successors distributed across Eaton and other buyers) manufactured through the 20th century one of the principal U.S. lines of electric distribution transformers, pole-mount reclosers, pad-mount switchgear, Bussmann brand fuses, and utility electrical protection equipment.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that McGraw-Edison / Cooper Power Systems distribution transformers, reclosers, and switchgear were specified through the asbestos era with:

  • Asbestos-insulated windings and internal components in distribution transformers
  • Asbestos arc-chute components in reclosers and switchgear (contact-arcing during load-break)
  • Asbestos-filled phenolic laminate components
  • Asbestos gasket material at transformer tank and cover joints
  • Asbestos-containing Bussmann fuse components

Utility electricians, substation electricians, industrial electricians, and lineworkers who serviced McGraw-Edison / Cooper distribution equipment disturbed asbestos as routine maintenance.
