Product Description
Marley Cooling Tower Company (today SPX Cooling Technologies; historically headquartered Mission KS / Olathe KS) was through the 20th century the dominant U.S. manufacturer of industrial cooling towers for refineries, petrochemical plants, power plants, steel mills, paper mills, and commercial HVAC chilled-water installations. Marley cooling towers ranged from packaged HVAC units to massive multi-cell industrial cooling tower installations serving 100,000+-gallon-per-minute circulation systems at U.S. utilities and Gulf Coast refineries.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Marley cooling towers were specified through the asbestos era with extensive asbestos-containing materials:
- Asbestos-cement (Transite-style) cooling-tower fill — the corrugated splash bars / film fill that maximized water-air contact surface area inside the tower
- Asbestos-cement structural members — louvers, partitions, drift eliminators, and structural panels
- Asbestos gasket material at flanged connections and water-distribution headers
- Asbestos electrical insulation on tower fan motors and drives
Cooling-tower maintenance workers, refinery pipefitters, and millwrights who tore out and replaced old asbestos-cement cooling-tower fill — a routine multi-decade maintenance task — released substantial respirable asbestos fiber during the work, particularly during dry tear-out when degraded asbestos-cement fill broke into respirable fragments.
Marley Cooling Tower Company has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
