Product Description
Joy Manufacturing’s longwall shearer — the coal-cutting workhorse that traversed steel-conveyor faces in underground longwall panels — allegedly relied on asbestos-containing braided packing rings, gearcase gaskets, and bearing-housing seals to survive the abrasive coal-dust and pressurized-water environment. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, the ranging-arm gearboxes and cutter-drum spindle bearings on Joy shearers were allegedly sealed with asbestos-fiber packing to prevent methane-laden roadway dust and cutting-water slurry from penetrating the drive train.
Workers Exposed
Longwall operators positioning the shearer along the face, mine mechanics rebuilding cutter drums between production shifts, and underground millwrights replacing ranging-arm bearings allegedly disturbed asbestos packing during pick-changing, gearcase teardowns, and bearing-seal renewals. Dust from cut and torn packing rings allegedly circulated in the confined longwall gate-road airstream.
