Product Description

The John Deere JD-550 was a mid-size crawler dozer widely used on site-prep, utility, forestry, and light-mining work throughout the 1970s and 1980s. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, the JD-550 drivetrain allegedly incorporated chrysotile-asbestos brake bands on the steering clutches and asbestos-lined transmission clutch friction discs. Deere dealer parts and aftermarket friction suppliers allegedly stocked replacement bands and linings as standard service items for decades.

Workers Exposed

Operators and mechanics allegedly disturbed asbestos-containing friction dust during steering-clutch adjustment, brake-band replacement, and final-drive service. Field mechanics allegedly used compressed air to blow out clutch housings, aerosolizing worn friction dust. Heavy-equipment operators, IUOE members, construction laborers on grading and utility crews, and dealer-shop mechanics all allegedly worked on and around JD-550 machines.
