Premises Description

Ingalls Shipbuilding (founded 1938 by Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Sr.; acquired by Litton Industries 1961; transferred to Northrop Grumman 2001; today HII Ingalls Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries) operated through the 20th century the Pascagoula Mississippi shipyard — historically the principal U.S. Gulf Coast Navy surface combatant builder.

Ingalls built (or built portions of) the Spruance-class destroyers, Kidd-class destroyers, Ticonderoga-class cruisers, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, Wasp-class amphibious assault ships, San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks, Legend-class Coast Guard cutters, and most recently Zumwalt-class destroyers and Independence-class littoral combat ships.

Through the asbestos era — particularly during the Spruance/Kidd/Ticonderoga construction programs of the 1970s-1980s — Ingalls employed tens of thousands of shipyard workers. The yard used Marinite, Mundet asbestos-cork, Johns-Manville pipe covering, Owens-Corning Kaylo, Pittsburgh Corning Unibestos, and other principal manufacturers’ asbestos products throughout naval surface combatant construction.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Ingalls Shipbuilding — as premises owner of the Pascagoula MS shipyard — exposed its shipyard workforce and contractor trades to extensive asbestos.

Ingalls Shipbuilding has been named as a Premises Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
