Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Gerber Plumbing Fixtures (founded 1932 as Gerber Plumbing Fixtures Corp., headquartered in the Chicago area) manufactured and distributed toilets, urinals, brass plumbing-trim, and related plumbing-fixture products for the residential, institutional (school and hospital), commercial, and light-industrial plumbing trades.
Plaintiffs alleged that Gerber plumbing fixtures used asbestos-containing components in the following ways:
- Tank-to-bowl gaskets on Gerber closet-couplings allegedly incorporated asbestos-fiber gasket sheet
- Flush-valve seats and washers on Gerber toilets and urinals allegedly incorporated asbestos-fiber gasket material
- Brass plumbing-trim gaskets and washers at Gerber flush valves, angle stops, and supply connections allegedly used asbestos-fiber sheet
- Commercial urinal and toilet fixtures installed at schools, hospitals, factories, and government buildings allegedly used asbestos-containing gasket and washer components at installation and service
Workers Exposed
Plaintiffs alleged that the following trades faced asbestos exposure from Gerber Plumbing Fixture products:
- Plumbers installing new Gerber toilets, urinals, and flush valves and cutting or replacing asbestos-containing tank-to-bowl and flush-valve gaskets
- Plumbers and maintenance mechanics tearing out and replacing Gerber fixtures during remodeling and renovation, disturbing existing asbestos gaskets and washers
- Institutional maintenance mechanics at schools, hospitals, and government buildings performing routine repair on Gerber fixtures over multi-decade service lives
- Pipefitters cutting and installing brass plumbing-trim alongside Gerber flush valves and stops
