Product Description
Fristam Pumps USA, headquartered in Middleton, Wisconsin, manufactured stainless-steel sanitary centrifugal pumps, positive-displacement rotary lobe pumps, powder-mixing pumps, and blenders used in dairy processing, brewing, beverage manufacturing, food processing, and pharmaceutical production. Fristam sanitary pumps were installed at fluid-milk plants, cheese plants, breweries, soft-drink bottling plants, and food ingredient plants across the United States.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Fristam sanitary pumps used during the asbestos era were fitted with asbestos-based gaskets at pump cover plates and sanitary clamp fittings, asbestos packing at shaft stuffing boxes on early shaft-seal models, and asbestos thermal insulation on jacketed pump bodies and steam-clean CIP piping. Replacement gaskets and packing were allegedly supplied as asbestos sheet stock by Garlock and Anchor Packing.
Workers Exposed
Plaintiffs alleged that workers exposed to asbestos through Fristam sanitary pumps included:
- Dairy-plant and cheese-plant mechanics servicing Fristam milk, cream, and whey transfer pumps
- Brewery maintenance workers rebuilding Fristam wort and beer transfer pumps
- Food-plant millwrights and pipefitters replacing gaskets and packing during Fristam pump teardowns
- Insulators removing and reapplying asbestos lagging from hot CIP and steam-clean piping serving Fristam installations
