Product Description
Fel-Pro, later part of Federal-Mogul, is alleged in publicly filed asbestos litigation records to have manufactured cylinder head gaskets containing compressed asbestos fiber sheet bonded to steel or copper facing layers. These allegedly asbestos-containing head gaskets were reportedly sold nationwide through the automotive aftermarket to independent garages, dealership service departments, and engine rebuilders from the 1930s into the 1980s. The compressed asbestos sealing layer was allegedly favored for its heat resistance and conformability at head-to-block joints on gasoline and diesel engines.
Workers Exposed
Court records allegedly describe exposure among automotive mechanics performing head gasket replacements, engine rebuilders removing scorched gasket residue from block decks and cylinder heads, machine shop workers dry-scraping and wire-brushing old gasket material, and DIY shade-tree mechanics working without respiratory protection. Gasket-set assemblers who cut, stacked, and packaged sheet stock at Fel-Pro facilities are also alleged to have faced fiber release during production.
