Product Description
Cutler-Hammer, Inc. (founded 1893, Milwaukee WI; acquired by Eaton Corporation in 1978; today Eaton Cutler-Hammer brand) manufactured through the 20th century one of the principal U.S. lines of motor controls, motor control centers (MCCs), industrial switchgear, panelboards, and electrical protection equipment for industrial, commercial, and utility applications — competing with Westinghouse, GE, Square D, Allen-Bradley, and Furnas Electric for the U.S. motor-control and switchgear market.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Cutler-Hammer / Eaton motor controls, motor control centers, and switchgear were specified through the asbestos era with asbestos arc-chute components in motor starter and contactor assemblies (arc chutes contain electrical arcing that occurs when contactor breaks load current) and with asbestos-filled phenolic laminate components in control enclosures.
Industrial electricians, plant electricians, and motor-control technicians who serviced Cutler-Hammer / Eaton equipment — particularly during arc-chute replacement and switchgear rebuild — disturbed asbestos as routine maintenance.
Cutler-Hammer / Eaton Corporation has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
