Product Description
Cummins Inc. (founded 1919 in Columbus Indiana by Clessie Lyle Cummins) and Detroit Diesel Corporation (founded 1938 as the Detroit Diesel Engine Division of General Motors; independent from 1988; today part of Daimler Truck) are through the 20th century and today two of the principal U.S. manufacturers of heavy-duty diesel engines for on-highway trucks, buses, marine propulsion and auxiliary power, industrial and power-generation applications, and (historically) diesel-electric locomotives.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Cummins and Detroit Diesel heavy-duty diesel engines were specified through the asbestos era with:
- Asbestos exhaust manifold and turbocharger insulation
- Asbestos gaskets at cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds
- Asbestos electrical wire insulation on engine wiring harnesses
- Asbestos engine-compartment thermal insulation on installed engines
Diesel mechanics, truck mechanics, marine machinists, and locomotive maintenance workers who serviced Cummins / Detroit Diesel engines — replacing head gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, exhaust wraps, and engine-compartment insulation — disturbed asbestos as routine maintenance.
Cummins Inc. / Detroit Diesel has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
