Product Description

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Crane Co.’s Plumbing Division — historically sold under the Crane Plumbing and Crane Plumbing Products trade names — was one of the largest plumbing-fixture, cast-iron-boiler, water-heater, and radiator manufacturers in the United States. This division is separate from Crane Co.’s industrial valve and pump product lines and marketed to the residential, commercial, institutional, and light-industrial plumbing and heating trades.

Plaintiffs alleged that the following Crane Plumbing product lines used asbestos-containing components:

  • Cast-iron sectional heating boilers with asbestos-containing rope packing between sections, asbestos millboard behind jackets, asbestos gaskets at flue and cleanout doors, and asbestos-containing block or blanket insulation
  • Domestic and commercial water heaters with asbestos-containing tank insulation, flue gaskets, and burner-plate gaskets
  • Cast-iron radiators and steam heating equipment with asbestos-containing rope packing, gasket material at unions and valves, and asbestos-containing pipe covering on connecting mains
  • Toilet-tank flush-valve seats, closet-tank gaskets, and plumbing-trim components allegedly incorporating asbestos-fiber gasket sheet
  • Commercial and institutional plumbing rough-in components installed alongside asbestos-containing pipe covering, mud, and thermal insulation

Workers Exposed

Plaintiffs alleged that the following trades faced asbestos exposure from Crane Plumbing products:

  • Plumbers installing and servicing Crane toilets, tanks, water heaters, and plumbing-trim fixtures with asbestos-containing gaskets
  • Steamfitters and pipefitters cutting and installing Crane cast-iron radiators, boilers, and connecting piping with asbestos rope packing
  • Boiler mechanics dismantling and rebuilding Crane cast-iron sectional boilers, disturbing asbestos section-joint packing and jacket insulation
  • HVAC mechanics servicing Crane heating equipment and connected asbestos-lagged distribution piping
  • Maintenance mechanics at schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, and light-industrial plants where Crane plumbing and heating equipment was installed
