Premises Description
ConocoPhillips Company (formed 2002 by the merger of Conoco Inc. — formerly Continental Oil Company dating to 1875 — and Phillips Petroleum Company dating to 1917; split 2012 into upstream ConocoPhillips and downstream Phillips 66; today headquartered Houston TX) and its predecessors operated through the 20th century one of the principal U.S. integrated oil major networks. Asbestos-era refining and petrochemical sites included:
Phillips Petroleum / Phillips 66:
- Sweeny Refinery (Sweeny TX) — Gulf Coast refinery and petrochemical
- Borger Refinery (Borger TX) — Texas Panhandle refinery
- Bartlesville OK — corporate research and operations
- Borger Petrochemical Complex (Borger TX)
Conoco / Continental Oil:
- Westlake LA / Lake Charles LA — major Gulf Coast refinery and chemical
- Ponca City Refinery (Ponca City OK) — Continental Oil flagship
- Billings Refinery (Billings MT) — Mountain West refinery
- Westville NJ / Trainer PA — Mid-Atlantic refining
- Wood River IL (Roxana IL) — Mid-Continent refinery (also covered as a Shell legacy site)
- Lake Charles LA Petrochemical Complex
Each operated continuously through the asbestos era with extensive asbestos-containing infrastructure: pipe covering on miles of refinery hot-oil and process piping, refractory insulation on FCCUs, process heaters, and crude distillation towers, gaskets and packing throughout process units, electrical insulation on refinery motor and switchgear systems, and spray-applied asbestos fireproofing on refinery structural steel.
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that ConocoPhillips and its predecessors — as premises owners — exposed refinery operator workforce (OCAW/USW representation) and contractor pipefitters, insulators, boilermakers, and trade workers to extensive asbestos.
ConocoPhillips / Phillips 66 / Conoco / Continental Oil has been named as a Premises Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation.
