Product Description
Coffin Turbo Pump Inc. supplied turbine-driven boiler feed pumps that delivered feedwater to main and auxiliary boilers on U.S. Navy steam ships and merchant vessels. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, the multistage centrifugal pump and its integral steam-turbine drive allegedly relied on braided asbestos packing at the shaft glands, compressed asbestos-sheet gaskets at horizontal casing splits and steam-inlet flanges, and asbestos block or blanket lagging over the turbine casing to contain heat. Pump repacking and turbine relagging allegedly generated airborne dust in the fireroom.
