Product Description
Bucyrus International’s walking draglines — the tub-and-shoe giants that stripped Illinois Basin, Powder River, and Appalachian surface coal — allegedly relied on asbestos-fiber band-brake linings clamped around the hoist and drag rope drums. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, the woven-asbestos brake bands allegedly withstood the friction heat generated by arresting fully-loaded buckets on each swing cycle. Lining wear allegedly deposited asbestos dust across the machinery deck.
Workers Exposed
Dragline operators, oilers making rounds through the machinery house, and mine mechanics replacing worn brake bands in the pit allegedly inhaled asbestos wear dust from Bucyrus hoist and drag brakes. Blowdown, sweep-up, and band-lining riveting operations allegedly released respirable fibers.
