Premises Description
Betz Laboratories, Inc. (founded 1925 in Philadelphia by brothers L. Drew Betz and John Drew Betz; renamed BetzDearborn after 1996 acquisition of Dearborn division of W.R. Grace; acquired by Hercules 1996; sold to GE Water & Process Technologies 2002; today Suez Water Technologies & Solutions / Veolia Water Technologies) was through the 20th century one of the principal U.S. producers of boiler-water and cooling-tower treatment chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, and process chemicals sold to refineries, power plants, steel mills, and chemical plants. Betz’s asbestos-era U.S. footprint included:

- The Woodlands TX / Houston TX — Gulf Coast operations
- Somerville NJ — East Coast water-treatment chemicals
- Kansas City KS — Midwest water-treatment chemicals (Dearborn heritage)

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that Betz Laboratories — as premises owner — exposed its chemical workforce and contractor pipefitters, insulators, boilermakers, and millwrights to asbestos pipe covering on process and steam piping, block insulation on reactors and process vessels, gasketing and packing on process piping, and refractory in fired heaters at Betz water-treatment chemical plants through the asbestos era.
