Product Description

The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W — founded 1867 by Stephen Wilcox and George Babcock; today Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc.; historically headquartered Barberton OH, later Charlotte NC, today Akron OH) is through the 20th century and today one of the principal U.S. utility, industrial, and marine boiler manufacturers. B&W is among the most heavily-litigated U.S. asbestos defendants; the Babcock & Wilcox Company Asbestos PI Trust was established under B&W’s 2000 Chapter 11 to handle asbestos personal-injury liability.

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that B&W products included:

  • B&W utility boilers — extensive asbestos refractory, block insulation, and boiler-jacket asbestos on U.S. coal-fired and gas-fired power-plant boilers
  • B&W industrial boilers — for refinery, paper-mill, chemical-plant, and industrial process installations
  • B&W marine boilers — supplied to U.S. Navy and commercial ships
  • B&W refractory products — asbestos-containing refractory for high-temperature applications
  • B&W pressurized water reactor (PWR) vessels — supplied to U.S. nuclear power plants (Three Mile Island, Rancho Seco, Davis-Besse, Crystal River, Arkansas Nuclear One, Oconee, others)
  • B&W gaskets and packing at boiler connections

The Babcock & Wilcox Company has been named as a Manufacturer Defendant in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation. B&W asbestos liability is channeled through the B&W Asbestos PI Trust.
