Chemical plant workers operated and maintained sprawling process units — reactors, columns, heat exchangers, and the miles of piping that tie them together, much of it running hot. For decades the insulation, gaskets, and packing that held heat in and sealed those systems were allegedly made with asbestos. Operators, pipefitters, boilermakers, insulators, and maintenance mechanics were exposed to fiber whenever that equipment was insulated, torn down, or repaired.
How Chemical Plant Workers Were Exposed
Like refineries, chemical plants ran continuously and were serviced during turnarounds, when units were opened wholesale. Insulation was stripped off columns, exchangers, and process lines; gaskets were scraped out of hundreds of flanges; and valve and pump packing was dug out and replaced. That work released asbestos fiber into congested unit spaces where it reached everyone nearby, not just the worker doing the job. Routine maintenance — chasing leaks, rebuilding valves and pumps, patching hot-line insulation — added steady daily exposure across long careers.
The Asbestos Materials — and the Products They Came In
Exposure tracked to a handful of material types. Each links to products documented in the AsbestosIndex as allegedly asbestos-containing:
Process insulation — pipe covering and block stripped and reapplied on hot columns, exchangers, and lines:
- Johns-Manville Kaylo pipe insulation · Owens-Corning Kaylo-10 pipe & block insulation
- Pittsburgh Corning Unibestos pipe & block insulation · Johns-Manville 85% magnesia pipe covering, all allegedly asbestos-containing
Block insulation — rigid block over vessels, exchangers, and large equipment:
- Careytemp block insulation · Fibreboard Pabco 85% magnesia block insulation — allegedly asbestos-containing
Packing — dug out and replaced on process pumps and valves:
- John Crane braided asbestos pump packing · Palmetto asbestos pump & valve packing · Crane Co. pumps with asbestos stuffing-box packing — allegedly asbestos-containing
Sheet gaskets — cut and scraped from flanges throughout the unit:
- Garlock compressed asbestos sheet gaskets · Durabla asbestos gaskets · Flexitallic spiral-wound asbestos gaskets — allegedly asbestos-containing

Take-Home Risk to Families
Like other dusty trades, chemical plant workers carried asbestos fibers home on their clothing, skin, and tools — exposing spouses and children who never worked with asbestos. See take-home asbestos exposure.
If you worked at a chemical plant and were diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease after exposure to asbestos on the job, you may have a legal claim.
