Company Overview

Republic Steel Corporation was founded in 1930 through the consolidation of several Midwestern iron and steel producers and headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. For most of the twentieth century Republic operated as one of the largest fully integrated iron and steel producers in the United States, running coke batteries, blast furnaces, basic-oxygen and open-hearth steelmaking shops, hot- and cold-rolling mills, bar mills, and finishing lines across Ohio, Alabama, New York, Indiana, and other states.

Republic’s flagship works — the Cleveland Works and the Youngstown/Warren Works in Ohio and the Gadsden Works in Alabama — were large, multi-decade integrated mills that combined ironmaking, steelmaking, rolling, and finishing on single campuses. These are exactly the plant types that have been repeatedly named in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation, both as premises defendants and in connection with the asbestos-containing refractories, insulation, and industrial products allegedly used throughout integrated steel operations.

Republic Steel was acquired by LTV Steel Corporation in 1984, and much of Republic’s finishing capacity was later folded into successor entities. Legacy Republic mill sites remained in operation for decades after original construction, and asbestos-containing materials allegedly remained in place throughout the pre-1980 operating era according to publicly filed asbestos litigation records.

Republic Steel is named on this hub as a premises-focused defendant. Integrated iron and steel mills of this era allegedly relied heavily on asbestos refractories, block and pipe insulation, gaskets, packing, ropes, cloth, and fireproofing to withstand the extreme heat, molten-metal splash, and steam loads of ironmaking, steelmaking, and rolling operations.

Documented ACM Footprint

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that pre-1980 Republic Steel integrated mill premises involved asbestos through:

  • Asbestos-bonded refractory brick and monolithic castables in blast furnaces, stoves, hot-blast mains, and BOF/open-hearth vessels
  • Asbestos gunning mix and ladle-lining materials at teeming ladles, tundishes, and torpedo cars
  • Asbestos pipe covering on high-pressure steam mains, blast-air lines, and process piping across ironmaking, steelmaking, and rolling mills
  • Asbestos block insulation on soaking pits, reheat furnaces, annealing furnaces, and coke-oven byproduct equipment
  • Asbestos sheet gaskets at hot-blast valves, bleeder valves, steam headers, and process-piping flanges
  • Asbestos rope, wick, and braided packing on mill pumps, blowers, and rolling-mill valves
  • Asbestos fabric expansion joints on reheat-furnace ductwork, waste-heat boiler flues, and stove connections
  • Asbestos cloth curtains and welding blankets around hot metal, slag, and continuous-casting operations
  • Asbestos sprayed fireproofing and millboard in mill switchgear rooms, motor-control centers, and overhead crane rooms

Plants by State

Republic Steel operated integrated iron and steel works across multiple U.S. states. Detailed premises information is available on the following state jobsite pages:

Workers Exposed

Plaintiffs allegedly worked at Republic Steel Cleveland OH, Youngstown/Warren OH, Gadsden AL, and other Republic integrated mills in trades including:

  • Bricklayers (BAC) laying and tearing out asbestos-bonded refractory brick in blast furnaces, BOF vessels, reheat furnaces, and ladles
  • Insulators (HFIAW) applying and removing asbestos pipe covering, block, and cloth on steam mains and hot-process equipment
  • Pipefitters (UA) breaking asbestos-gasketed flanges on blast-air, steam, and process piping
  • Boilermakers rebuilding asbestos-refractory-lined boilers, stoves, and vessels
  • Millwrights servicing rolling-mill pumps, valves, blowers, and gearboxes with asbestos packing
  • Electricians and IBEW workers on asbestos-millboard-lined mill switchgear
  • Sheet metal workers (SMART) fabricating asbestos-fabric expansion joints on reheat-furnace ductwork
  • Republic operators, laborers, crane operators, and maintenance personnel working around asbestos refractories, insulation, and fireproofing throughout the mills

If You Worked at Republic Steel

If you or a family member worked at a Republic Steel integrated iron and steel mill — Cleveland OH, Youngstown/Warren OH, Gadsden AL, or any other Republic or LTV-legacy facility — before 1980 and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, or another asbestos-related disease, you may have a legal claim.
