Talc — a soft magnesium silicate mineral — was used across the U.S. economy as cosmetic powder and as a low-cost industrial filler, mold release, paint extender, ceramic body component, and paper coating. Per publicly filed U.S. litigation, talc from certain mining sources was contaminated with naturally-occurring tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite asbestos, because talc and these amphibole-asbestos minerals form together in the same metamorphic rock.
