Gaskets, Packing & Sealing Materials
Asbestos-containing compressed sheet gaskets, spiral-wound gaskets, and braided rope packing were the sealing materials of choice for high-temperature, high-pressure piping systems in power plants, refineries, and industrial facilities for most of the twentieth century. Products from Garlock, Flexitallic, John Crane, Lamons, and Chicago Gasket were installed by the millions in flanged connections, valve bodies, and pump stuffing boxes. Pipefitters who cut, fitted, and removed gasket material — as well as workers in the immediate vicinity — received documented occupational asbestos exposure.
