Cosmetic Talc — Asbestos-Contaminated Talcum Powders

Cosmetic talc is the finely-milled talc used in baby powder, body and bath powder, face and shave talc, and feminine hygiene products. Per publicly filed U.S. litigation, cosmetic-grade talc was sourced for decades from deposits — including Vermont, upstate New York, Italy, and China — that also contained naturally-occurring tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite asbestos. Plaintiffs allege the milling process could not reliably separate the asbestos from the talc, so the finished powders carried asbestos into the home.

Because these were consumer products applied directly and repeatedly — often to infants, and over decades of daily adult use — the alleged exposure pathway reached people who never worked an industrial job in their lives, as well as the household members who applied the powder. This is the basis of the cosmetic-talc branch of asbestos litigation, distinct from the industrial and construction products that dominated the earlier asbestos era.
